Become a permanent resident without leaving the U.S.

Adjustment of Status (often called “AOS” or “the I-485”) is the path to a green card from inside the United States. You stay home, you keep working (with a work permit), and you complete the green card process here.

Not everyone qualifies to adjust inside the U.S. The path depends on how you entered, what immigration history you have, and whether a visa number is available for your category. The first thing we do is confirm AOS is the right path for you before you file anything.

You may qualify to adjust your status if you meet the requirements below. If you are unsure about any of them, schedule an eligibility consultation and we will go through it with you.

Who qualifies

• You are physically in the United States.
• You are eligible for an immigrant visa (through family, employment, asylum, U-Visa, VAWA, or another category).
• A visa number is available for your category.
• You were inspected and admitted or paroled when you entered the U.S., or you fall under an exception (Military Parole in Place, VAWA, 245(i), T-Visa, U-Visa).
• You do not have an immigration violation that requires a waiver first.
• You can provide evidence of the underlying immigrant petition.
